  • Species Scientific Name Speyeria zerene hippolyta
  • Federal Listing Status Threatened

Special needs

Oregon silverspot butterflies occur in salt-spray meadows. They depend upon two species of violets (early blue and western blue violets) as host plants. Spruce trees adjacent to meadows can serve as shelter and windbreaks.

Limiting factors

Habitat loss due to coastal development is a major limiting factor for Oregon silverspot butterflies. Fire suppression that allows grasses to overshadow early blue violets, recreation, and other activities that modify grassland habitat can be harmful to this species.

Conservation actions

Continue to implement actions identified in the recovery plan. Protect known sites of occurrence, with long-term monitoring and management to maintain suitable habitat characteristics.
